In Hinduism, Navratri is considered a highly sacred and significant period for the worship of divine energy (Shakti). Among the nine days, Ashtami and Navami of Chaitra Navratri hold special importance for the worship of the Goddess. It is said that during this holy time, the spiritual energy of the Vaishno Devi shrine increases manifold. According to ancient legends, Maa Vaishno Devi's ardent devotee, Shridhar, who was deeply sorrowful due to being childless, was immersed in devotion during Navratri. During this time, Maa Vaishno appeared to him in the form of a young girl and requested him to organize a community feast (bhandara). Shridhar, with utmost devotion, obeyed her command and invited the villagers along with Bhairavnath, a disciple of Guru Gorakhnath. During the feast, Maa served food to everyone from her divine vessel. However, Bhairavnath rejected the sattvic (pure vegetarian) food and demanded meat and alcohol instead.
The Goddess refused Bhairavnath’s demand, which angered him. In his fury, he insulted her and tried to forcibly stop her. Sensing Bhairavnath’s evil intentions, Maa Vaishno instantly flew towards the Trikuta mountains and entered a cave, where she meditated for nine months. This cave is now famously known as Ardhkuwari or Garbh Joon and is considered to hold spiritual significance equal to the main shrine (Bhavan). After nine months, the Goddess emerged from the cave, and when Bhairavnath pursued her again, she assumed her fierce Mahakali form and destroyed him. It is believed that Maa Vaishno Devi still resides in this sacred region and continues to fulfill the wishes of her devotees.
