World-renowned Gorakhnath temple spread over 52 acres

Situated in the Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh, Gorakhnath Temple was established by the much-revered Guru Matsyendranath Ji. In the 6th century BC, Gorakhpur was one of the 16 Mahajanapadas of the Koshal Kingdom. Today, The premises of the temple are spread over an expanse of 52 acres, in the center of the city.
History of the temple
As per a chronicled tale, Gorakhnath Ji performed tapasya at Devipatan Shaktipeeth, placed at the border of India and Nepal. Later, Pateshwari Shaktipeeth was established at the same spot. Dedicated to Gorakhnath Ji, the Gorakhpur temple is the only prominent place of its kind in India. While the temple witnessed multiple attacks by Mughals and Europeans, its glory was restored every time. After being revamped in the 9th century, Gorakhnath temple was demolished by the invaders in the 13th century. It was rebuilt and a military force of the saints and monks was formed to ensure its safety. The temple occupies special importance amongst the members of the Dasnami and Nath sects. Yogi Adityanath is the head priest of the Nath community in India and his popularity derives from the religious significance of his position. Notably, the Gorakhpur temple has up-peeths in Nepal and Bangladesh as well.
Significance of the temple
Gorakhnath temple is popular amongst devotees in India and Nepal. Amid many miraculous stories linked to Gorakhnath Ji, it is believed that a dozen recitals of Gorakhnath Chalisa endow a worshipper with Brahma Prakash or the holy light. Lit by Gorakhnath Ji in the Treta Yug, the Akhand Prakash or the seamless flame has been burning incessantly in the temple. It is an emblem of godly presence and spiritual wisdom.
Architecture of the temple
Displaying exceptional architecture, the temple houses a 5.5 ft tall idol of Gorakhnath Ji beautifully carved out of marble. The temple is built using Shaligram rocks, which add to its spiritual ambiance and divine appeal.
