The nine days of Navratri are extremely sacred for devotees, during which they worship the various forms of Maa Durga with devotion and discipline. According to the scriptures, the Ashtami Tithi holds special significance because it is believed that the merits obtained from worship throughout the entire Navratri can also be attained by observing the fast and performing special rituals on Ashtami alone. This is why it is called Maha Ashtami. As per ancient legends, on this day, Maa Durga defeated the demons Chanda and Munda. It is believed that worshiping Maa Bagalamukhi, one of the ten Mahavidyas, on this day grants victory over enemies, protection from negative energies, and success in legal matters. Maa Bagalamukhi, known as the Goddess of Stambhan (paralyzing power), destroys the enemies of her devotees and removes obstacles from their lives. Similarly, Devi Pratyangira, considered an immensely powerful form of the Adi Shakti and a destroyer of evil forces, liberates her devotees from all negativity and grants them divine protection.
Therefore, on this sacred occasion of Maha Ashtami, a grand ritual will be organized at the Maa Bagalamukhi Temple in the holy city of Ujjain by 25 Brahmins. This includes the recitation of the Bagalamukhi-Pratyangira Kavach Path, the chanting of 1,25,000 Bagalamukhi Mool Mantra, and a Havan (sacred fire ritual).
