Pleased with Shani's high aspirations, Surya Dev advised him to go to the Avimukta Kshetra, Kashi, and perform penance to Lord Shiva there, promising that all his desires would be fulfilled. Obeying his father's command, Shani Dev went to Kashi, created a Shiva Lingam, and began worship of Lord Shiva. Pleased with his penance, Lord Shiva appeared and granted him the highest position among the planets and appointed him the judge of the Mrityu Lok. To ensure strict enforcement, he was also given the boon of planetary influence named Saade Saati and Dhaiya. According to astrology, the Uttara Bhadrapada nakshatra is ruled by Shani. Therefore, worshipping Lord Shiva and Shani during the favourite month of Lord Shiva, especially during the Bhadrapada Nakshatra, is considered to be very fruitful.
