Hanuman Jayanti is a major festival of Hinduism, which is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Hanuman. This festival is celebrated on the full moon day of Chaitra month.

Lord Hanuman was born to Mata Anjani and King Kesari. He was blessed by PawanDeg (wind god), due to which he was named Pavanputra. Hanuman ji is the 11th incarnation of Lord Shiva. His life story is a unique example of courage, devotion, and service. Hanuman ji is blessed with immortality, and he is the most influential god in Kaliyuga.

Why is Hanuman Jayanti Celebrated Twice?

Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated twice a year:

Chaitra Purnima: It is more famous in North India. This day marks the awakening of his divine powers.

Kartik Chaturdashi: In South India, it is celebrated as his physical birth. This day is the beginning of his incarnation on earth.

Facts About Hanuman Ji

You will be surprised to know that Lord Hanuman also had five real brothers and all were married. It is mentioned in Brahmanda Purana. The Purana contains a description of Lord Hanuman's father Kesari and his dynasty. It is also mentioned that Vanar Raj Kesari had 6 sons; the eldest son was Lord Hanuman. The names of the brothers of Lord Hanuman were Matiman, Shrutiman, Ketuman, Gatiman and Dhritiman respectively and they all had children. Therefore, their dynasty was several years old.

Apsara Anjana, who once lived in heaven, was cursed by a sage that when she loves someone, her face will become like a monkey. So she pleaded with Lord Brahma for help. By the grace of Lord Brahma, she took birth on earth as a human. Anjana later fell in love with Kesari, the king of the apes, and they both got married. Anjana was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva and performed hard penance to please him. She wants a son like God Shiva in qualities as well as strengths, so she asked for a boon. God Shiva accepted it.

In the Sanskrit language, Hanu means jaw and mana means disfigured. Do you know that the childhood name of Lord Hanuman was? Once in childhood, Maruti ate Lord Surya as a fruit. It caused darkness in the entire world. Lord Indra became angry by the incident, he struck the child Maruti with a thunderbolt that broke his jaw and he became unconscious. After this incident, Hanuman lost his jaw forever.

Despite being a celibate (Brahmachari), Lord Hanuman had a son named Makardhwaja. According to stories, when Hanuman took a dip in the ocean after burning Lanka, a drop of his sweat fell into the water. This drop was swallowed by a mighty fish, which later gave birth to Makardhwaja.

Lord Hanuman wrote his own version of the Ramayana by carving it on rocks with his nails. His Ramayan was filled with deep devotion and divine details. When Sage Valmiki saw it, he was amazed but also felt that his own Ramayan was not good enough. Seeing Valmiki’s concern, Hanuman decided to remove his version. This act showed Hanuman’s humility and selflessness. Despite his unmatched devotion to Lord Ram, he never thought about praise and always respected great sages like Valmiki.
