As described in the Puranas, the story of Lord Rahu begins during the Samudra Manthan (the great churning of the ocean). An asura named Svarbhanu, disguised, sat between Surya Dev (the Sun) and Chandra Dev (the Moon) to partake of the divine nectar of immortality. Lord Vishnu, in the enchanting form of Mohini, swiftly severed Svarbhanu’s head with his Sudarshana Chakra. However, as the nectar had already reached his throat, both head and body became immortal - the head became Lord Rahu, and the body became Lord Ketu. Since then, Rahu harbors an eternal grudge against the Sun and Moon, periodically eclipsing them - symbolizing how his shadow can obscure clarity in human lives.
